Slavery was an institution that empowered whites and humiliated and weakened blacks in their struggle for freedom. In the book, the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, slave Frederick Douglass gives his account of what it was like being a slave and how he was affected. Additionally, Douglass goes even further and describes in detail the major consequences the institution of slavery had on both blacks and whites during this time period. At one point in the narrative, Douglass descr ibed what it felt like to be separated from his loved ones. The white masters and slave-owners during the time of slavery were above all cruel, uncaring, and responsible for damaging slaves mentally, emotionally, and physically. Mr. Covey, one of Douglass masters was especially cruel to his slaves. Mr. Covey succeeded in breaking me. I was broke in body, soul, and spirit. My natural elasticity was crushed, my intellect languished, the disposition to read departed, the cheerful spark that lingered about my eye died; the dark night of slavery closed in upon me; and behold a man transformed into a brute!ï ¿ ½ (Douglass, 38) While black slaves were being tortured mentally and physically by whites, the consequences slavery had on people did not stop here. Then Pip meets Estella, the adopted daughter of Miss Havisham, an old lady who is bitter and eccentric. Estella taunts Pip and is very cruel to him, but he still falls in love with her. Miss Havisham is teaching Estella to hurt men, because she herself was deserted by her fianc? on her wedding day. One day, Mr. Jaggers, a lawyer, reveals to Pip, that there are Great Expectations for Pip. He is given the money to become a gentleman and receive a good education; he assumes that his benefactor is Miss Havisham. In London, Pip makes many new, high-society friends. He receives the news that Miss Havisham is dead. Pip visits Joes home and is told that Joe and Biddy, Pips friend, are married. Pip then returns to London and continues his life for eleven more years. Pip finally goes back to Joes house, to find that Joe and Biddy have a son, and they have named him Pip. During that last visit, he returns to Miss Havishams old run-down home. There he meets Estella, grown into a woman, her husband dead. There, Estella asks Pip to for! give her, he does, and all is well. So the story ends, with grown Pip and a changed Estella both at peace with each other. In conclusion, I thought that this was a very well written book. It took me a while to get into it and understand the plot, but now I see that Dickens wrote Great Expectations with a very complex plot and well described characters. From Joe Gargery to Miss Havisham, I really got to know the characters as if they were people. After the war, he initiated reconstruction of America by signing â€Å"homestead Act in 1862† where government land was sold to the poor citizens at low prices (Sandburg, 2002). Legal tender act of 1862 also created the first currency of US while the National banking Act of 1863 and 1865 formed the sound financial system which ensured economic growth and stability.
